When the sun is warm and food is plentiful, bee colonies grow rapidly. In midsummer, a queen bee can lay up to 2,000 eggs a day! When the hive starts to get full, the bees begin to plan to split the colony, a process known as swarming.

Swarming is a natural way for bees to divide the hive so there is enough space. Some workers begin preparing the colony for the upcoming move, while others set out to find a new nesting site. The colony begins raising new queens and excercising the old queen to be fit enough to fly. Once the scout bees have found a suitable spot for the new home, part of the colony fly off with the old queen to build the new hive. The remaining bees stay behind to prepare the hive for the birth of the new queen.

We help the bees with their moving plans by splitting the colonies into a new hive at midsummer.
